Feel like quitting? Don't!

Feel like quitting? Don't!

I had the idea of creating my blog in January 2016. By April, I had decided on a name, written some blog posts, created a website (which was a huge learning curve) and I just posted it on Facebook. All of a sudden, everything I had been working on secretly, was now out for the world to see.

And then the doubts started...what if no-one wants to read this; the website doesn't look good... the pictures look terrible and so many more. After 3 weeks of launching, I shut it down and went back to the drawing board to get the website redesigned.

I got a number of messages from people asking if I was aware that my website was down. This was shocking and exciting to me at the same time. It meant people were actually interested in reading what I had to say.

But this excitement didn't last very long. I felt like I was constantly hitting road blocks in getting my blog re-launched. I look back now and every road block was a chance for me to do some research, think outside the box, talk to seasoned bloggers and find solutions.

This sounds all nice and dandy now, but it definitely did not feel like that going through it. At some point I thought why am I even doing this??

Just go to work and do your job and don't complain. But the longer my blog was down the more I felt like I was wasting time in reaching out to someone.

I used the tough love approach but that didn't really work. I put so much pressure on myself that, I couldn't focus long enough to get anything done. I won't lie at some point I wanted to quit.

How where all these bloggers out there getting their blogs to look so beautiful, with so many followers. I started to compare myself to other bloggers that had been blogging for years. It was not good.

I completely forgot my own advice. I was comparing myself to others. Comparing my starting point to their 2-4 years of hard work.

That week a friend posted this poem on Facebook and the timing could not have been better.

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will;

When the road you’re trudging seems all uphill;

When the funds are low and the debts are high;

And you want to smile but you have to sigh.

When all is pressing you down a bit

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit

Success is failure turned inside out;

The silver tint on the clouds of doubt;

And you can never tell how close you are;

It may be near when it seems far.

So stick to the fight when you’re hardest hit

It’s when things go wrong that you must not quit

- John Greenleaf Whittier

After reading this, I took some time off and did not look at the website or even try to write. I did nothing for about a month.

After my hiatus, I saw things from a different perspective and I was able to refocus. Taking time off helped me realize I had lost sight of my original intentions.

With the new focus and realignment, I stopped over analyzing everything and stopped the comparison. I took the "done is better than perfect" saying to heart.

In the short time my blog has been back up, I have collaborated with Woezo Africa Dance Theatre and designed costumes and dresses, which is my passion.

I recently did this guest post and have more in the works with some amazing bloggers to bring value and inspire more people.

I know this is only the beginning. The more I keep at it, the better I will get; the more opportunities will come and the more I can help inspire more people.

Never despise the days of small beginnings. A forest starts with a tree and a tree starts as a seed. With continuous nutrition the seed grows a little bit everyday even when it doesn't look like it has changed.

Wherever you are on your journey, I just want to encourage you and say don't quit! Life is a marathon not a sprint. I hope this has inspired you today.
