These past few weeks have just been so busy with life and everyday activities. I realized I had only texted my sisters and a few close friends back and forth but did not speak to them. I thought to myself - pick up the phone. I was so happy I did. It was extremely refreshing. Phone calls are not dead people. Pick up the phone!
After my phone calls, I realized something - everyone is going through some sort of difficulty and it doesn't translate in a text, except they tell you. But it is never the same. I also realized that just a simple conservation can bring some level of comfort and clarity even if it doesn't solve the issue.
This is where your support system comes in. We all need that person or small group of people we can call and pour our hearts out to.
A support system is exactly that: people that support you and are there for you no matter what. This also includes people you support. It is a 2 way relationship because you can't always be the taker and neither can you always be the giver.
The 3 reasons why we all need our support system are:
1. They keep us sane:
There are those times when your day has just gone completely off the rails and all you want to do is talk to someone you trust, who will listen. Someone who understands and knows exactly what you are going through. Well, a text just won't do.
There is also the fact that you don't have time for a chat and you feel like you don't want to bother any body with your problems. Let's imagine that this is the exact time your sister or best friend calls you. I'm sure you'll agree with me that it is one of the best feelings in the world for both of you. It helps you remember that you are not alone and you can keep going!
2. They keep us accountable:
There are those times when all we want to do is stay in bed all day or just let things fall by the way side. Of course that is impossible when you have kids! But I'm sure you would if you could, I know I would. But when you have someone you are accountable to or for, it changes everything.
With an accountability partner, you feel a responsibility to have an answer or at least an idea to resolve an issue. Even when you don't, you have a partner that can talk things through with you to find a solution. This helps our productivity, our sense of self and accomplishment. We could try to do this on our own but the truth is no man is an island.
3. They remind us of our humanity:
No matter your race or background, we all have the same fundamental human need to love and be loved. At some point in our lives we all need help, we are human after all.
No one has a manual for life. We are all trying to live our lives the best way we know how. We are all striving to make our lives better. Because of this we are all going through some form of issue or difficulty.
What a relief to know that someone has gone through something similar and can help you through a difficult situation and vice versa. What a relief for someone to offer you help even when you haven't asked. And what a relief to know there is someone you can always call when you need that help!
Pick up the phone and call someone today, life is too short not to.
