As women we are always so busy with others and it is very easy to put ourselves on the back burner. If we are not taking care of ourselves, how can we be well enough to take care of others. Do you ever wonder why in-flight safety instructions say put on your own oxygen mask first? Think about it!
Our Brazen Woman this month is someone I met fairly recently and has impacted me in such an amazing way. Chrysta Lewis is the owner of Scarlet Edge Beauty. She has taken something as seemingly unimportant as nail polish to the next level!

The Brazen Closet: What do you do?
Chrysta: I own Scarlet Edge Beauty, It is a home based business for beauty services ranging from body scrubs/wraps and makeup to manicures, pedicures and most recently facials. My philosophy is that we need to love ourselves and we don’t need to use harsh chemicals to be beautiful.
The Brazen Closet: What did you do before this?
Chrysta: I have a very eclectic background. I have degrees in Criminology, Law Enforcement and Astro Psychology. I worked as an Emergency Response Operator for some years and realized that I wanted more. I started an astrology consulting business and part of that led me to become a Curling Coach for a professional women’s team. After I had my son, I started my business as an Arbonne independent consultant which I have proudly been for over 7 years. So I have done a lot of different things.
The Brazen Closet: You have done such a wide range of things, how did make the transition to aesthetics?
Chrysta: It seems like they are not related but they really are. My focus has always been around helping other people and so it has just evolved over the years. When I had my Astrology business I did a lot of consulting and I was able to bring the ability to understand, communicate and teach into the curling team and now into my current business.
My experience with Arbonne really got me started in the love of aesthetics. Part of this process was the education about the ingredients and processes used in the cosmetics and skincare industry. It really opened my eyes to the chemicals we use every day without knowing.
After I got divorced I went through a period of soul searching about who I was and how I could help other women. I brought together my experience with understanding people at a deeper level to helping others see the beauty within themselves. I don’t want women to have to hide behind a mask but to be their own true selves. Getting your nails done is not just the act of polish but of feeling good about taking care of yourself, knowing that you are using healthy products. It radiates from the inside.
Scarlet Edge Beauty is the result and now I get to do more of what I love.
The Brazen Closet: How did you get started?
Chrysta: After I decided on what I wanted to do, I started taking certifications a bit at a time. I didn't want to open a business without being properly certified. I wanted to learn everything I could about all the healthy products that I could bring to my clients. Knowing what I had learnt about the industry from Arbonne, it really became a passion for me to be able to educate other women and provide alternative options.
The Brazen Closet: How do you differentiate yourself in the beauty industry and create a brand that reflects you?
Chrysta: There are so many nail salons and wellness spas in the city, I try to create a space where people feel at home; where they can really be comfortable and be themselves. They are free from judgement and able to ask questions. My clients are women who are engaging in self-care to help improve their personal lives and their confidence and that is very important to me.
I also focus on the healthy aspect of it; I have researched every product I use, I know what they contain and make sure they are safe.
The Brazen Closet: How did you get over the doubt hurdle and get yourself out there?
Chrysta: I definitely had a lot of doubts. I was also really hesitant and fearful because I had past businesses that didn’t work out the way I had hoped. As an entrepreneur you always have a bit of that doubt but it is also part of the excitement to keep going.
I started with a lot of friends and family as clients, till I got more and more comfortable. I’m also part of a number of networking groups as well as social media. There are so many networking groups around. I like the heart centered groups where you can truly build relationships and connections with other women instead of just being salesy all the time. Those are also the type of clients I want to attract to my business.
The Brazen Closet: What motivates you?
Chrysta: Definitely my kids. I want to be able to teach them by example, that no matter what life throws at you, you can still achieve your dreams. One step at a time, you can make it happen! This path hasn’t always been easy, but I’ve learned that being a single mom isn’t a handicap, it’s made me a stronger person. I know I can have, be, and do anything I want and that I have a wonderful, supportive village helping me along the way.
The Brazen Closet: What have you learnt from being in business and what would you have done differently?
Chrysta: I started Scarlet Edge Beauty 3 years ago. It has been a huge process and I’ve learnt so much about the industry, products and myself. I’m excited for what it has become. Having my past businesses also taught me a lot. In the past I spent a lot of money and resources that I shouldn’t have. I should have researched other ways to do it.
I also took a lot of self-development courses which have really helped me. It has taught me that the best and most successful women often fail at something first. You need to learn from your mistakes. As long as you are learning you are never failing.
The Brazen Closet: What have you learnt about yourself in this process?
Chrysta: I’ve learnt perseverance and my confidence has really grown. The brand I'm building in Scarlet Edge is really starting to become known. This has been really apparent in the fact that majority of my clients are referrals. This is amazing because that is one of the best compliments you can get. My clients know and trust me enough to refer their family and friends to me, because they know I will take care of them and that is an awesome feeling.
As a home based business, I don’t want just anybody in my home. As a result, I don’t spend a lot of money on advertising, which is great for my business.
The Brazen Closet: Any big plans for 2017?
Chrysta: I just completed my facial certification which was a big goal for this year. I will have a few other things coming later in the year but you’ll have to stay tuned to find out! I will also continue to build on my 5 year plan that includes opening a wellness centre when my girls are a bit older.
The Brazen Closet: Any final words or advice?
Chrysta: Having a business is truly a process, you don’t start out knowing everything. I’m excited for what is in store for 2017. I have grown so much personally and it is now showing up in my business. I’ve really become more organized in my business in the past year and a half. As my confidence in myself grows, it reflects in my clients. It is really beautiful to see how awesome all my clients are!
My focus is to make people feel welcome and loved and I try to provide that for my clients. I have used visualization and goal setting techniques and this has helped with knowing who my ideal clients are, which I didn’t know when I started and they are coming to me now. Many of my clients are entrepreneurs and business women. I enjoy that because they all bring a little dose of inspiration to every appointment.
I have also come to the place of realization that it is not just a hobby this is my livelihood, and it has become of higher importance and more real because I have 3 kids to support with it. So there is no room for failure and I must make it work.
People have asked how I’m staying afloat with the economy, because things like getting your nails done is often the first to get cut when you are on a reduced budget. But I have really been blessed because I am not just another nail salon. I am creating a space where women feel like they are taking care of themselves and loving themselves. That is exactly what everyone needs right now, a space to unwind and be yourself without judgement.
Entrepreneurship can be lonely and we all need self care. It is sometimes the touch of having a body treatment and having another woman to talk to that makes a world of difference. We are all in this together so I consider this my way of helping women rise to be their best selves.
