3 Easy Ways To Break Out Of A Style Rut Without Spending A Dime!

How do you know you are in a style rut? When you wear the same set of clothes week-in week-out, even when you have a closet full. When getting dressed in the morning is now on auto-pilot and not fun anymore. I have been in a style rut recently and I have been working on getting out if it ASAP. I figured a few people might need some help and motivation as well.

I have implemented these 3 things and I can say they are tried and tested. They definitely work if you are not in the market to splurge on a new wardrobe.

1. Shop in your closet:

Don’t start by going out and buying new items if you don’t know what you currently have. Majority of women, me included (hides face) have new items with tags on in their closets that haven’t been worn. Start with what you have.

The items don’t even have to be new. There are things you haven’t worn in months. If you are like me and you live where there are seasonal changes, it is possible the last time you saw and wore some of your clothes was a year ago.

It is time to pull them out from the back of your closet and try them on. If they still fit and look good, then add them to your current clothing circulation.

2. Try different colour and pattern combinations:

When we wear a set of clothes, we tend to style them the same way all the time. For example: always wearing the same matching colour jewelry on an outfit; the same matching sweater on a dress; or always wearing a black blouse with colourful pants/skirt.

It is time to change things up. Try that dress with a blazer instead of a sweater. Wear a complimenting colour jewelry or scarf with your outfit, they don't all have to match anymore!

Mix and match patterns that you won’t usually combine. Pattern mixing is very trendy right now. A blouse with polka dots goes nicely with a striped skirt; and a combination of stripes and floral or abstract patterns also give great visual interest. Try it, you just might like it.

If in doubt, Pinterest is your best friend. Look for style inspiration, you will be amazed at what you will find. But a word of caution, time yourself when you are on Pinterest. Don’t be like me, I have gotten carried away a few times and realized I had been on there for 2 hours straight! (hides face)

3. Accessorize!

Accessories are your best friend! They do wonders to completing outfits. I cannot over-emphasize what difference they make. They can take the same set of clothes and transform them from day to night and everything in between. Don’t be afraid to use them.

Try different colours and styles. They are inexpensive if you want to experiment. If you need help getting started, look out for my guide to accessorizing coming up shortly!

This is just a simple illustration. This polka dot top paired with a black pencil skirt without a necklace, would be great for work or a business meeting. But add a pair of jeans and red beads, you have a completely different look. It makes a huge difference and takes you to a night out with friends or nice dressy dinner date. What do you think?

As always, no outfit is complete without your confidence. The world is your runway, wear confidence on your sleeves!
